Lubbock, TX – Temperatures will سقوط quickly to freezing between 3 a.m. and 9 a.m. Sunday, creating conditions that could lead to icy patches on roads and sidewalks across the South Plains. Moisture from lawn sprinklers or residual water on pavement may freeze, especially on bridges and overpasses along US-84 and Loop 289.
According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, a Freeze Warning is in effect for the far southwest Texas Panhandle and northern South Plains, where lows are expected to range from 28 to 32 degrees. The coldest readings will occur near areas such as Muleshoe, Littlefield, Dimmitt, and Tulia.
Lubbock itself may hover near freezing, while surrounding rural communities are more likely to dip below 32 degrees for several hours before sunrise. These temperatures can damage early-season crops, gardens, and unprotected vegetation. In addition, any active irrigation systems could create thin ice layers on nearby roads and sidewalks.
Residents are urged to turn off lawn sprinklers overnight, cover sensitive plants, and use caution if traveling early Sunday. Even small amounts of ice can create hazardous footing and driving conditions in shaded or elevated areas.
Temperatures will rise above freezing after 9 a.m. Sunday, reducing ice concerns, but additional alerts may be issued if colder air lingers longer than expected.
