Louisville, KY – A fast-moving cold front is expected to bring strong, gusty winds across much of central Kentucky and southern Indiana later this morning through Thursday evening, prompting a Special Weather Statement from the National Weather Service.
According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, winds will begin increasing by mid to late morning Thursday, with sustained speeds of 20 to 25 mph and gusts between 30 and 40 mph expected through the afternoon. Isolated gusts up to 45 mph are possible late in the day, particularly along and just behind the cold front, where brief rain showers may enhance wind strength.
The statement covers a wide area including Louisville, Lexington, Bowling Green, Elizabethtown, Frankfort, Georgetown, Danville, Richmond, and surrounding communities, as well as southern Indiana cities such as New Albany, Jeffersonville, Corydon, Jasper, Madison, and Scottsburg.
Forecasters warn that the gusty winds could blow around unsecured outdoor items, including holiday decorations, trash bins, and lightweight furniture. Drivers of high-profile vehicles may experience difficult travel conditions, especially on open roadways and north–south routes.
While widespread power outages are not anticipated, isolated outages could occur if strong gusts bring down tree limbs or weakened power lines, especially during brief rain showers late this afternoon and evening.
Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor objects, use caution while driving, and stay alert for rapidly changing conditions as the cold front passes through the region. Winds are expected to gradually ease later tonight.
