Baton Rouge, Louisiana – A rare winter weather setup could bring freezing rain to parts of Louisiana late this week as temperatures hover near the freezing mark, raising concerns for slick roads and travel disruptions. While temperatures may fluctuate around 32 degrees, even brief periods below freezing could allow ice to form on bridges and overpasses.

According to the National Weather Service, colder air pushing south into the Lower Mississippi Valley from Saturday through early next week will interact with periods of moisture. This setup creates the potential for rain to freeze on contact in some areas, particularly overnight and during the early morning hours when temperatures are coldest.

The highest risk for freezing rain appears across northern and central Louisiana, including Shreveport, Monroe, Alexandria, and areas north of Interstate 10. Portions of Interstate 20, Interstate 49, U.S. 165, and elevated roadways could become slick if icing develops. Farther south, including Baton Rouge and nearby communities, temperatures may hover close enough to freezing to still pose isolated icing concerns, especially on elevated surfaces.

State and local officials urge residents to monitor road conditions closely, avoid unnecessary travel during icy periods, and prepare homes for cold weather by protecting exposed pipes. Drivers should reduce speeds and allow extra stopping distance if freezing rain occurs.

Cold conditions are expected to linger into early next week, and winter weather advisories may be issued if confidence in icing increases.
