Louisiana residents along the Atchafalaya River are on alert as the National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for several locations due to rising water levels. The watch will be in effect starting next week and could persist until further notice.

The Flood Watch covers the Atchafalaya River at Morgan City, Butte La Rose, and Simmesport, where flooding is possible in the coming weeks. Officials are concerned about impacts to local infrastructure, with buildings near the river’s edge expected to flood in some areas.

According to the National Weather Service, the Atchafalaya River at Morgan City may reach flood stage (6 feet) by April 16. If this happens, buildings near Ann Street and the Berwick floodwall could be submerged. Backwater flooding could also affect portions of Lake Palourde and Stephensville. In Butte La Rose, minor flooding could begin around April 25 if the river reaches flood stage (20 feet). Further upstream in Simmesport, flood risks are expected to grow by April 24, especially in the Avoyelles Parish area.

Residents are urged to stay informed about river conditions and be prepared for potential flooding. River traffic restrictions will also be enforced in affected areas.
