New Orleans, LA – A Red Flag Warning is in effect today for much of southeast Louisiana and coastal Mississippi as critical fire weather conditions develop across the region.

According to the National Weather Service, the warning is in place from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. CDT due to a combination of strong winds and low humidity. Northwest winds are expected to reach speeds of 15 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph. Relative humidity levels may drop as low as 20 percent, increasing the risk of rapid fire spread.

The affected areas include Pointe Coupee, East and West Feliciana, St. Helena, Iberville, West and East Baton Rouge, Assumption, and St. James parishes in Louisiana, as well as Wilkinson, Amite, Pike, Walthall, and Pearl River counties in Mississippi, among others.

Residents are strongly urged to avoid any outdoor burning, as fires could ignite easily and spread quickly under these conditions. Authorities recommend securing loose items that could be affected by high winds and ensuring all fire safety measures are in place.

A Red Flag Warning signifies that a combination of strong winds, dry conditions, and warm temperatures can lead to extreme fire behavior. Residents should remain vigilant and follow all local fire restrictions until conditions improve.
