New Orleans, LA – A Red Flag Warning has been issued for much of southeast Louisiana and coastal Mississippi on Thursday due to heightened fire danger conditions. Strong winds and low humidity will create an environment where wildfires could start and spread rapidly.
According to the National Weather Service in New Orleans, the warning will be in effect from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. CDT on Thursday. Winds from the northwest are expected to reach 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph. Additionally, relative humidity levels could drop as low as 20 percent, significantly increasing fire risks.
The warning affects numerous parishes and counties, including East and West Baton Rouge, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Livingston, Ascension, and Terrebonne in Louisiana, as well as Wilkinson, Amite, Pike, Walthall, Pearl River, Hancock, Harrison, and Jackson counties in Mississippi.
Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and exercise extreme caution with any activities that could ignite fires. Even a small flame could quickly become uncontrollable under these conditions.
Residents are advised to stay informed on fire weather updates and report any wildfires to local authorities immediately. The combination of strong winds, dry air, and warm temperatures creates a critical fire hazard that could pose a threat to homes and property.
