Shreveport, LA – An Air Quality Action Day has been declared for Caddo, Bossier, and De Soto Parishes on Thursday due to Saharan dust, which will create unhealthy air for sensitive groups.
According to the US National Weather Service in Shreveport, the alert is issued due to a thick layer of Saharan dust, affecting air quality. People with lung and/or heart disease, children, older adults, and those who are active outdoors should limit prolonged exertion. The air quality alert is coupled with a heat advisory, with temperatures expected to reach up to 99 degrees Fahrenheit on Friday and nearly 100 degrees over the weekend.
The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality advises residents to avoid prolonged outdoor activities, especially during the afternoon when particle concentrations are highest. High temperatures and humidity will persist, with heat index values potentially reaching 107 degrees.
The current forecast predicts continued clear skies with temperatures remaining in the high 90s to low 100s through early next week. Residents are advised to take precautions, such as staying hydrated, wearing light clothing, and avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours.
