Lombard, Ill. — In a press release on June 18, the Lombard Police Department announced plans for an Independence Day traffic enforcement campaign. The department joins the Illinois State Police and over 200 local police and sheriff’s departments on this campaign. It will run from June 20 to July 17.

The department warned residents that impaired driving is dangerous for vehicle drivers, passengers and others on the road. They also noted the severity of financial and personal consequences that come with a DUI charge. Police encouraged drivers to consider several safety tips for drinking around the holiday. The press release suggested designating a sober driver and giving your keys to them before leaving. Public transportation or taxis and rideshare services if people find themselves too intoxicated to drive.

Lombard Police encouraged all drivers to report drunk drivers to law enforcement. Drivers should also make sure all passengers are safely buckled as an added defense against impaired drivers.

“We’re asking all residents and visitors to celebrate Independence Day responsibly,” Sergeant Tom Balsitis said in the news release. “If you’re celebrating this Independence Day, make a plan before you head out. Don’t drive impaired and always wear your seat belt.”
