Lockport, IL – The Gaylord Building Historic Site is showcasing a new exhibit, “Rise from Ruins: The Great Lockport Fire of 1895,” which captures a pivotal moment in Lockport’s history. The exhibit, which is open to the public through September 25, 2024, highlights the devastating fire that ravaged the city’s downtown and led to the establishment of the Lockport Fire Department.
Visitors can explore Lockport as it was in the 1890s, witnessing the community’s life before, during, and after the fire. The exhibit details the fire’s catastrophic impact and celebrates the resilience of the Lockport community as they rebuilt from the ruins. The story culminates with the birth of the Lockport Fire Department, a vital institution that continues to protect the city today.
A central feature of the exhibit is the original chalk artwork by local artist Kevin Traynor, which spans the entire gallery space. Traynor’s work vividly brings history to life, appealing to both art and history enthusiasts.
