WILMINGTON, IL – Wilmington residents are rejoicing as State Senator Patrick Joyce, State Representative Anthony DeLuca, and Will County Board member Joe Van Duyne announce a game-changing investment of over $54 million to upgrade Route 53 within the next six years.

Addressing long-standing concerns about the road’s safety and condition, the ambitious project will benefit not only Wilmington but also neighboring communities like Gardner, Braceville, Godley, Braidwood, and Joliet.

“Fixing Route 53 is very important to communities in this area, as it goes right through downtown and people use it to get to work,” said State Senator Patrick Joyce, who vows to bring tax dollars back to the region.

The much-needed upgrades include replacing the Forked Creek Bridge in Wilmington with a $1 million investment, $4.4 million for repaving from Gardner to the Will County line in Godley, and $40.5 million for intersection improvements, pedestrian and bicycle enhancements, channelization, and utility adjustments from West Arsenal Road in Wilmington to Nowell Park in Joliet.

Will County Board member Joe Van Duyne emphasized the importance of community safety and local economic growth through these projects. The substantial investment is part of the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Multi-Year Plan, a $40 billion initiative focusing on various transportation improvements.

Wilmington Mayor Ben Dietz expressed his excitement, stating, “For years roads have been a pain point and the progress that we are making is fantastic.  We still have plenty of work to do, but this is a huge win for Wilmington!”

With the promise of safer and smoother travel, Wilmington anticipates positive impacts on the local economy and residents’ quality of life.
