LOWELL, IN – A 62-year-old driver from Lowell found herself in a harrowing ordeal yesterday, resulting in life-threatening injuries. The incident unfolded northwest of Lowell, in West Creek Township, when her SUV collided with a formidable dump truck.

The alarming incident occurred at approximately 6:17 a.m. on August 31, 2023, when Lake County Sheriff’s Department officers rushed to the scene at the intersection of U.S. 41 and 157th Avenue in response to a distressing report of a traffic accident. Preliminary investigations reveal that the SUV’s driver, traveling northbound on U.S. 41, attempted to make a left turn or execute a U-turn at the ill-fated 157th Avenue intersection.

Tragedy struck as the SUV turned directly into the path of an oncoming dump truck, leading to a catastrophic collision. The powerful dump truck forcefully impacted the passenger door of the SUV, resulting in severe damage and life-threatening injuries to the driver.

As of the latest update, the injured driver remains in critical condition, battling for her life. The Indiana State Police promptly conducted a Department of Transportation inspection on the dump truck to determine if any mechanical factors contributed to the collision.
