Indianapolis, IN – Considerable to catastrophic flooding impacts could continue across parts of the Midwest Friday as additional rainfall threatens to worsen already dangerous conditions, including the possibility of renewed, life-threatening flooding in southeast Indiana.

According to the NOAA Weather Prediction Center and National Water Center, significant river flooding continues in southeast Indiana. Although water levels have crested at most locations, additional rainfall Friday could cause conditions to deteriorate again.

Forecasters specifically warned that renewed flooding in southeast Indiana could become life-threatening.

Northern Illinois and northern Indiana also remain at risk Friday. Considerable flash and small-stream flooding impacts are possible, while minor river flooding is expected in portions of the region.

Another round of flash flooding could develop across Iowa and northern Illinois Friday night, extending the threat into the overnight travel period.

Across the broader Mid-Mississippi and Ohio valleys, locally significant flash flooding and urban flooding remain possible through Friday, particularly in Iowa.

NOAA’s outlook includes areas facing the highest potential flooding impacts in Indiana, with a broader considerable-risk zone extending across portions of Illinois and neighboring states.

Officials are urging people to avoid travel through locations that are already flooded or particularly vulnerable to rising water. Drivers should exercise additional caution after dark, when flooded pavement can be difficult or impossible to identify before entering the water.

Motorists who encounter a flooded roadway should turn around rather than attempt to cross it.

The National Weather Service defines catastrophic flooding impacts as exceptionally rare, widespread flash flooding or major river flooding capable of inundating or destroying roads and structures, prompting evacuations and requiring numerous water rescues.

Residents across the affected Midwest region should monitor updated forecasts and local flood warnings throughout Friday.
