CRESTWOOD, IL – Quick-thinking and coordinated efforts by the Crestwood Police Response Team, including Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) trained officers, prevented a suicide attempt on Sunday at the Cicero Avenue bridge.

According to officers, the unidentified subject had a history of suicide attempts and  was located near Chic-Fil-A with a tow strap tied around his neck and attached to a bridge support beam.

Officers engaged in a dialogue with the agitated subject, attempting to de-escalate the situation. However, as the subject moved closer to the edge of the bridge, the response team sprang into action.

The CIT trained officer rushed to the strap and quickly cut it loose from the beam, while other officers successfully subdued the subject. The subject was then transported to the hospital for evaluation with the assistance of the Crestwood Fire Department.

Prior to the events, traffic was redirected and officers requested assistance from neighboring agencies, including the Fire Department prepared for a possible water rescue.

This incident serves as a reminder of the crucial role of crisis intervention and the availability of resources like the 988 Suicide and Crisis Hotline, which provide free and confidential support to individuals in distress.
