LAKE BARRINGTON, Ill. – A man with a revoked Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) Card found himself in hot water after accidentally shooting himself during a vivid dream.
According to Lake County Sheriff’s Police, Mark M. Dicara, 62, woke up to the harsh reality of his actions on April 10, 2023, when Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a gunshot wound report at his residence on Shoreline Road.
Dicara, in the throes of what he believed was a home invasion dream, reportedly reached for his .357 Magnum Revolver and fired at the imagined intruder. Startled awake by the sound of the gunshot, he discovered that he had inadvertently wounded himself in the leg. Promptly, Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene, skillfully applying a tourniquet to stem the significant blood loss.
An investigation by the Sheriff’s Department into the incident revealed that Dicara’s dream was nothing more than a figment of his imagination. There had been no actual burglary attempt at his residence. More troubling, however, was the discovery that Dicara possessed a firearm despite having his FOID card revoked.
The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and approved charges against Dicara, including two felony charges, Possession of a Firearm without a Valid FOID Card and Reckless Discharge of a Firearm.
Dicara was taken into custody Monday, June 12th, and has since been released after posting bond set at $150,000. Dicara’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 29.
