Geneseo, NY – A Monroe County resident was arrested Monday following a Livingston County Sheriff’s Office investigation into an alleged violation of New York’s sex offender registration requirements.

According to the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, investigators arrested 39-year-old Ezra Colon on Monday, Jan. 12, on a felony charge of Failure to Register and Verify as a New York State Registered Sex Offender.

Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty said Colon is a Level 2 New York State Registered Sex Offender who allegedly failed to report a change of address, a requirement under state law. Authorities say the violation was uncovered during a follow-up investigation conducted by sheriff’s investigators.

Under New York State Corrections Law Section 168-F(4), registered sex offenders are required to notify the state within 10 calendar days of any change in address, employment, school enrollment, or internet identifiers. Failure to do so can result in felony charges.

Investigators located Colon at an apartment complex in the Town of Gates, where he was taken into custody without incident, according to the sheriff’s office. He was transported to the Livingston County Jail and processed by Central Booking deputies for pre-arraignment detention.

Colon was later arraigned at the Livingston County Centralized Arraignment Part (LC-CAP) at the jail before Town of York Justice Koch. The judge released Colon on his own recognizance, citing that the charge does not qualify for bail under New York’s Bail Reform Act.

The Livingston County Public Defender’s Office represented Colon during arraignment, while the Livingston County District Attorney’s Office appeared on behalf of the prosecution. Deputies from the Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division also assisted with the investigation.

The case remains pending in court.
