Fort Myers, FL – A Fort Myers woman has been charged after allegedly leaving two dogs to die in her backyard while she was away in Miami, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Carmine Marceno called the case “pure cruelty,” stating that detectives and the Animal Cruelty Task Force worked for months to secure justice for the animals. “No living being should be treated like this,” Marceno said.
According to investigators, deputies were called to a home on Ninth Avenue in Pine Manor in March 2025, where they found two deceased dogs locked in crates with empty food and water bowls. The necropsy results showed both animals — a 1-year-old French Bulldog named Meme and a 6-year-old Pit Bull mix named Bubbles — died from heat stress.
Authorities say the owner, Jamesha Rollins, allegedly left the dogs unattended while traveling to Miami, failing to arrange care for them. Following the months-long investigation, Rollins was arrested and charged with two counts of animal abandonment and two counts of aggravated animal cruelty.
Sheriff Marceno commended the detectives and prosecutors for pursuing the case, saying Rollins “will answer for her crimes.”
This case highlights an ongoing issue of animal neglect in Florida, where authorities urge pet owners to make proper arrangements when traveling or facing emergencies.
