Homewood, IL – A 35-year-old man from Freeport is in custody after allegedly attempting to rob a Mobil Gas Station at gunpoint late Saturday night, according to the Village of Homewood Police Department.

Police say the incident occurred around 11:27 p.m. on November 1, 2025, at the Mobil station located at 17500 Dixie Highway. Responding officers arrived after reports of an armed individual inside the store.

According to police, the suspect — identified as Devon Smallwood — allegedly entered the gas station, displayed a semi-automatic handgun, and demanded $300 in cash from the clerk. Officers quickly located Smallwood still at the scene and recovered a loaded Glock handgun from his sweatshirt pocket.

Investigators later determined that Smallwood is a previously convicted felon. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office has since approved the following charges:

  • Armed Robbery (Class X Felony)
  • Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Felon (Class 3 Felony)

Smallwood remains in custody awaiting a detention hearing scheduled for November 3, 2025. No injuries were reported during the incident, and police say the investigation remains ongoing.
