Boston, MA – A rare April snowstorm blanketed parts of Massachusetts overnight, bringing significant accumulation to the higher elevations of Central Massachusetts and the Berkshires.
According to the National Weather Service Boston, the heaviest totals were recorded in the northern Worcester Hills, where both Princeton and Ashburnham reported 9 inches of snow by Saturday morning. The snowfall began late Friday and continued into early Saturday, surprising residents unaccustomed to such late-season winter weather.
Elsewhere across the state, totals varied dramatically based on elevation. Most communities in the lower elevations, including much of the Greater Boston area, saw only a trace to 1 inch of accumulation. Western Massachusetts towns, including parts of the Berkshires, measured between 4 to 7 inches, while central locations such as Barre, Fitchburg, and Leominster recorded between 5 to 7 inches.
The sudden snow event impacted travel across interior Massachusetts, with slick roads reported on Route 2 and Interstate 190. Residents are urged to drive cautiously and allow extra time for commutes, especially in the higher terrain.
Temperatures are expected to rise later Saturday, aiding in snow melt, though slushy and icy conditions may persist through the early morning hours in elevated areas.
