Charleston, WV – A widespread Freeze Warning is set to take effect early Sunday morning across much of West Virginia, as temperatures are expected to plunge well below seasonal norms.

According to the National Weather Service Charleston WV office, the warning covers lowland counties throughout southwest and west-central West Virginia, along with parts of southeast Ohio and northeast Kentucky. The alert runs from 2 a.m. to 10 a.m. Sunday, with overnight lows forecasted in the low 30s and even into the 20s in common cold spots.

The late-season chill could have serious consequences for unprotected crops and sensitive vegetation. Officials are urging residents to take immediate steps to protect outdoor plants, especially in areas where the growing season has already started.

Cold air will settle in under clear skies and calm winds, allowing for rapid heat loss after sunset. Gardeners and farmers should bring potted plants indoors or use coverings to prevent frost damage.

While West Virginia often experiences chilly Aprils, temperatures this low are uncommon this late in the month, particularly after recent mild weather. The warning marks a stark shift for the region, and residents should remain alert for any additional advisories as the weather evolves.
