Eugene, OR – Lane County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue crews successfully located and rescued a lost individual experiencing a medical emergency south of Eugene last week, according to authorities.
According to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and volunteer Search and Rescue personnel responded around 5 p.m. Friday, May 23, near the 85000 block of Sharen Road after reports of a missing person in distress.
Officials said the individual was reportedly suffering from a medical event and became lost in the area. Search and Rescue teams eventually located the person, who was found dehydrated and disoriented.
Rescuers then guided the individual to waiting emergency medical personnel. The person was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Authorities did not release additional information about the individual’s condition.
The sheriff’s office used the incident to remind residents and outdoor visitors about the importance of recreation safety, especially in remote or mountainous areas where weather and terrain conditions can quickly change.
Officials encouraged people heading outdoors to tell someone where they are going and when they expect to return, carry offline maps in areas with limited cell service, and pack emergency items such as flashlights, whistles, and overnight supplies.
The sheriff’s office also stressed that anyone who becomes lost should stay in place if possible and attempt to make themselves visible to rescuers.
Lane County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue deputies and volunteers regularly respond to emergencies involving lost hikers, stranded motorists, and outdoor medical incidents throughout western Oregon.
