Tampa, Florida – Strong thunderstorms could bring wind gusts up to 50 mph along I-75 by midafternoon Saturday, creating sudden travel hazards across interior sections of west-central Florida.
According to the National Weather Service in Tampa Bay, a Level 1 out of 5 severe weather risk is in place from 1 p.m. through 7 p.m., primarily targeting inland counties and areas closer to the east coast. The main threats include damaging wind gusts and hail up to quarter size, along with frequent lightning and pockets of heavy rainfall.
Communities such as Lakeland, Sebring and areas east of Tampa are most likely to see stronger cells develop during the peak heating hours. Drivers on I-4 and I-75 may encounter rapidly changing conditions, including reduced visibility in heavy downpours and debris blown into roadways during stronger gusts.
While widespread severe weather is not expected, isolated storms could briefly intensify. Lightning poses a significant danger for anyone outdoors, including at parks, ballfields and construction sites.
Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, monitor weather alerts and move indoors when storms approach. Travel during the 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. window should include extra caution, especially across interior Polk and Highlands counties. Storm activity is expected to weaken after sunset, but additional statements may be issued if stronger storms develop this afternoon.
