Duluth, MN – Strong northeast winds are creating hazardous boating conditions today across Western Lake Superior, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). Forecasters have issued a Small Craft Advisory as waves build to between two and four feet.

According to the NWS Duluth office, winds are expected to diminish Monday, leading to calmer conditions on the water through Tuesday and Wednesday. The marine forecast shows wind gusts generally in the 7–14 knot range during midweek, allowing for safer travel across key points including Chequamegon Bay, Sand Island, and the Twin Ports.

By Thursday, however, boaters may see another round of stronger northeast winds returning. Forecast models show gusts increasing to more than 20 knots late in the week, raising the potential for renewed rough waters across the western half of the lake.

The advisory comes at a critical time for anglers and late-season recreational boaters who continue to take advantage of early fall conditions. Officials urge those operating smaller vessels to monitor forecasts closely and avoid unnecessary trips during hazardous periods.

Lake Superior’s size and wind exposure make conditions highly variable from one bay or harbor to another. Mariners are advised to review local forecasts for specific points such as Grand Marais, Port Wing, and Silver Bay before departure.
