Muskegon, MI – The body of a man was found Thursday afternoon in Lake Michigan, five days after he went missing near Muskegon.
According to Muskegon police, crews discovered the body of 21-year-old Aleksei Makovik, who had been missing since Saturday. Witnesses reported seeing Makovik struggling in the water before going under about 200 feet from the south breakwater at Pere Marquette Park.
Crews searched for hours on Saturday before suspending efforts due to darkness. The search resumed on Sunday and Monday.
The Muskegon Department of Public Safety extended condolences to Makovik’s family and friends. Authorities also warned people to be cautious of Lake Michigan’s changing weather and water conditions, especially near breakwaters.
