INDIANA – With summer in full swing, beaches around Lake Michigan are expected to be crowded. It’s crucial for beachgoers to understand how to recognize and survive rip currents, which are powerful, fast-moving channels of water, that on average claim over 70 lives annually.
According to Indiana Dunes National Park, rip currents are strong, narrow streams of water that pull swimmers away from shore. These currents can reach speeds of up to eight feet per second, making them especially dangerous. Understanding how to escape a rip current can save lives.
When caught in a rip current, remain calm and avoid swimming directly back to shore. Instead, swim parallel to the shoreline to escape the narrow current. Once out of the current, swim at an angle back to the beach.
Preventative measures are also key. Always check the weather and water conditions before entering the water. Look for warning flags and signs posted by lifeguards, and never swim alone. Wearing a life vest can provide additional safety.
Knowing how to identify rip currents can prevent accidents. Look for areas where waves are not breaking or where water appears darker and choppier. If in doubt, stay out of the water.
