Berrien, MI – Boaters and beachgoers along Lake Michigan are urged to exercise caution Saturday due to hazardous weather conditions, including the potential for waterspouts. Waves of 5 to 8 feet, driven by strong currents, are expected along the coastlines of Berrien, MI, and La Porte, IN.
According to the National Weather Service, conditions will be most favorable for waterspouts during the morning and early afternoon hours. These waterspouts could form in southern Lake Michigan nearshore waters, particularly if lake-effect showers develop.
A Beach Hazards Statement and High Swim Risk remain in effect through Sunday morning. Life-threatening swimming conditions are expected, and the public is advised to avoid the water.
The potential for waterspouts is high due to the difference between the warm lake and the incoming cool Canadian airmass. Mariners and beachgoers should be on high alert, as waterspouts can develop quickly and pose serious danger.
