Cleveland, Ohio – Strong northwest winds are stirring up Lake Erie, creating hazardous marine conditions through Friday morning, with waves reaching up to 7 feet in the lake’s central and eastern basins.
According to the National Weather Service Cleveland, sustained winds of 15 to 25 knots will generate waves of 4 to 6 feet today and tomorrow, increasing the risk of rip currents and posing a serious danger to swimmers and small watercraft. A Small Craft Advisory and Beach Hazards Statement are in effect from Maumee Bay, Ohio, to Erie, Pennsylvania.
Conditions along the shoreline—from Lucas County through Cuyahoga, and east to Ashtabula and Erie County, PA—could lead to life-threatening surf and currents. Officials urge boaters to remain in port and advise beachgoers to stay off piers, breakwalls, and river mouths, where currents can be strongest.
This event follows a pattern of spring wind surges common across the Great Lakes, but wave heights nearing 7 feet are above seasonal averages. Local authorities are monitoring for possible updates if winds increase further.
Marine warnings remain in place through Friday morning, and additional advisories could be issued as conditions evolve.
