Erie, PA — Communities along the Lake Erie shoreline are under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch early Thursday as a fast-moving storm line brings high winds, lightning, and possible tornadoes through the region.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect until 7 a.m. EDT for areas along and near Lake Erie’s southern shore, including northwestern Pennsylvania, northeastern Ohio, and inland zones up to 50 miles from the lake.

Boaters and shoreline residents from Ashtabula, OH, to Erie, PA, should prepare for wind gusts reaching 70 mph, choppy wave conditions, and frequent cloud-to-ground lightning. The risk of an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out, particularly along the lakefront where low-level wind shear may be enhanced.

Maritime advisories are in place, with extreme turbulence possible near the surface and aloft. The NWS warns small craft should remain in harbor until the watch expires. Residents in lakefront neighborhoods are urged to monitor weather alerts, secure waterfront equipment, and remain indoors during the strongest storm periods.

Spring storms can intensify rapidly over the lake, and forecasters stress caution for early-morning travelers and anglers accustomed to calmer April weather patterns.
