Burlington, VT – Northern New York faces hazardous winter weather, with up to 20 inches of lake-effect snow expected through Friday morning. Southeastern St. Lawrence, Southern Franklin, and Southwestern St. Lawrence counties are under a Lake Effect Snow Warning until 7 a.m.
The National Weather Service reports heavy snowfall, gusty winds up to 40 mph, and visibility dropping to less than a quarter mile. Route 3 between Tupper Lake and Harrisville is at the highest risk for whiteout conditions and blowing snow.
Travelers should delay all unnecessary trips. If travel is unavoidable, ensure vehicles are winter-ready and carry emergency supplies, including water and flashlights. Sudden visibility changes and slick roads could make travel treacherous.
Officials warn commuters to use caution, allow extra travel time, and avoid sudden stops or turns. Bridges, overpasses, and hills will be especially hazardous.
Conditions will improve after the warning expires Friday morning, but cleanup efforts may linger. Stay informed through NOAA Weather Radio or local media for updates on the storm’s progress and safety recommendations.
