Burlington, VT – Residents across northern New England are being urged to remain vigilant as a combination of heavy rainfall and snowmelt has increased the risk of flooding in the region. The National Weather Service has issued flood watches that remain in effect until 7 a.m. Thursday for parts of Vermont, New York, Maine, and New Hampshire.
According to the National Weather Service, areas across Vermont and Maine received between 1.5 and 3 inches of rain, compounding the effects of a deep snowpack primed for melting. Rivers and streams in many areas have continued to rise overnight, threatening to overflow their banks in low-lying and flood-prone locations.
In Vermont, the affected areas include counties such as Chittenden, Franklin, and Windsor, while Maine has seen flood watches extend to Aroostook and Penobscot regions. New Hampshire’s Grafton and Carroll counties are also on alert. Officials have warned of possible flooding in urban areas with poor drainage as well as along creeks and streams.
Residents in vulnerable locations are encouraged to monitor river levels closely and prepare for potential evacuations if conditions worsen.
