Hobart, IN – A New Chicago man was killed Monday afternoon while walking on railroad tracks in Lake County, Indiana. The incident occurred around 12:16 p.m. at the intersection of 41st Avenue and Wisconsin Street in Hobart.
Police identified the victim as 38-year-old Keith Deering, who was reportedly wearing headphones when he was struck by the train. According to the Hobart Police Department, the train’s engineer was the one to report the collision.
Investigators are working to determine the exact circumstances leading up to the fatal accident, including the operational status of the railway. Chief of Police Garrett Ciszweski expressed condolences to the family and urged the public to avoid walking on tracks, stressing the inherent dangers.
Authorities remind residents that walking along railway tracks in Indiana is illegal and considered a Class B misdemeanor. Parents are encouraged to educate their children about the risks.
