Gary, IN – Drivers across Lake County and Northwest Indiana should prepare for significant travel disruptions starting this weekend as multiple ramps along State Road 912 (Cline Avenue) close for resurfacing work.
According to the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), ramp closures will begin as early as Friday, May 2, with eastbound U.S. 20 to northbound SR 912 shutting down for up to 12 days. Additional closures are scheduled to follow shortly after, impacting key connections used by commuters traveling between Gary, Hammond, and East Chicago.
By Friday, May 8, several ramps—including westbound U.S. 20 to northbound SR 912 and northbound SR 912 to both directions of U.S. 20—will close for approximately seven days. INDOT officials noted these closures are weather-dependent and timelines could shift.
Another major closure is set for Monday, May 11, when the northbound SR 912 ramp to SR 312/Chicago Avenue will be shut down for up to five days.
The project spans SR 912 between U.S. 12 and 15th Avenue and includes resurfacing as well as culvert replacement and pipe liner installation. Some ramps requiring additional work could remain closed for up to two weeks, while others are expected to reopen within a week.
Meanwhile, current ramp closures at Gary Road and U.S. 12/Columbus Drive/Airport Road are expected to reopen by this weekend, offering temporary relief in the area.
Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time, follow posted detours, and stay alert for changing traffic patterns throughout the construction period.
