Lake County, IN – A Gary man is facing 11 criminal charges after a traffic stop early Sunday on Interstate 65 led to the discovery of drugs and a modified handgun.
According to Indiana State Police, Trooper Kevin Council stopped a 2005 Ford Mustang around 1:45 a.m. near the 257-mile marker after observing erratic driving. The driver, identified as Lorenzo V. Watkins, 30, allegedly failed to stop immediately and exhibited signs of intoxication.
A search revealed suspected methamphetamine, controlled substances, and a Glock .40-caliber handgun with a machine-gun conversion switch under the driver’s seat. A child was also in the vehicle, prompting a report to the Department of Child Services.
Watkins was transported to the Lake County Jail after a court-approved blood draw at Southlake Methodist Hospital. He faces multiple felony and misdemeanor charges, including possession of a machine gun, drug-related offenses, and operating while intoxicated.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
