Elmhurst, IL – A DuPage County judge has granted the state’s motion to detain two Elgin men accused of shooting at another vehicle and leading police on a high-speed chase reaching 115 mph on I-290.
According to DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin, the incident began early Saturday when a gray Hyundai Sonata allegedly struck another car on an I-290 off-ramp in Addison. The victims followed the vehicle until Cristopher Martinez Mendoza, 19, allegedly fired a handgun at them near Lake Street and Villa Avenue. The victims then contacted police.
Authorities say the Sonata, driven by 19-year-old Iban Pelayo, fled from Elmhurst police, eventually crashing and rolling on the I-290 exit ramp to St. Charles Road. Martinez Mendoza allegedly fled the scene but was apprehended minutes later. A loaded ghost gun was recovered nearby.
Both men face felony charges, including aggravated discharge of a firearm and aggravated fleeing and eluding. They remain in custody pending their court appearances later this month.
