Gary, IN — The Gary Police Department has announced a rigorous enforcement campaign against distracted driving, specifically focusing on cell phone use while behind the wheel. From April 3 through April 21, 2024, officers will be on heightened alert to curb this hazardous behavior.
According to the department’s initiative, drivers caught in the act of texting or engaging in phone calls without using hands-free devices will face stiff penalties. With the backing of the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute Traffic Safety Division, the campaign warns of fines up to $500 for those found in violation of Indiana’s hands-free law.
The move to impose substantial fines aims to deter drivers from taking their attention off the road, reducing the chances of accidents linked to distracted driving. The Gary Police Department reminds motorists that safety comes first, and driving without distractions is a critical part of road safety.
