Lake County, IN – A 19-year-old driver was killed in a collision involving a semi-truck Saturday at 181st Avenue and Harrison Street. The crash occurred around 11:45 a.m., according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Department.
Investigators say the driver of the passenger vehicle was traveling north on Harrison Street and attempting to turn onto 181st Avenue. A semi-truck, driven by a 67-year-old, was heading east on 181st when the vehicles collided.
The driver of the passenger vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. Two rear passengers, ages 14 and 15, were airlifted to Chicago hospitals with life-threatening injuries. The semi-truck driver was not injured.
According to Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr., the department’s crash reconstruction team is investigating the cause of the crash. He expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and loved ones, noting that the investigation is ongoing.
The tragic accident has shaken the local community as authorities work to determine what led to the fatal crash.
