Long Grove, IL – The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in solving a hit-and-run crash that left a bicyclist critically injured. The incident occurred on Sunday, August 18, 2024, along Route 53 between Route 83 and Lake Cook Road.

At around 4:15 p.m., sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a crash on Route 53, west of Robert Parker Coffin Road. Preliminary findings show a 63-year-old Kildeer man was bicycling southbound on the road’s shoulder when a grey pickup truck, attempting to pass a slower vehicle, swerved onto the shoulder and into the grass, striking the bicyclist. The driver fled southbound on Route 53 after the crash.

The bicyclist suffered serious injuries and was initially taken to Northwest Community Hospital. His condition worsened, prompting his transfer to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

The Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone with dash camera footage from the area, especially commercial vehicles, to contact the Lake County Sheriff’s Technical Crash Investigations Team at 847-377-4000. The authorities hope this footage can help identify the driver involved in this serious hit-and-run incident.
