Gurnee, IL – A 60-year-old electric scooter rider suffered life-threatening injuries Monday evening after being struck by a detached trailer wheel along U.S. Route 41 in Gurnee, according to police.
According to the Gurnee Police Department, officers responded at approximately 5:25 p.m. Monday, July 27, to the intersection of U.S. Route 41 and Grand Avenue for a reported crash involving a Ford F-450 and a person operating an electric scooter.
The preliminary investigation indicates the scooter rider, a 60-year-old man from Park City, Illinois, was traveling northbound on the shoulder of Route 41. At the same time, a 45-year-old Waukegan man was driving a northbound Ford F-450 while towing a trailer carrying a front loader.
Police said two wheels detached from the trailer during the incident. One of the detached wheels struck the scooter rider, causing life-threatening injuries.
The victim was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition, according to authorities.
The driver of the Ford was not injured and remained at the scene. Police said he is cooperating fully with investigators.
The Gurnee Police Department’s Major Crash Assistance Team is assisting with the ongoing investigation. Authorities are asking anyone who may have captured the crash on a dash camera to contact the Gurnee Police Department. Investigators are particularly interested in video recorded near U.S. Route 41 and Grand Avenue around 5:25 p.m. Monday.
The investigation remains active, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
