Lake County, IL – An elderly woman has died and two others were injured Friday afternoon following a residential fire in unincorporated Spring Grove, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded around noon on December 19, 2025, to a home in the 38300 block of North 6th Avenue, where callers reported smoke pouring from the front of the residence.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, a 52-year-old man living at the home attempted to rescue an 83-year-old woman and a 55-year-old woman as smoke filled the house. The man was forced to exit through the rear after being overcome by heat and smoke.

Firefighters arrived moments later and rescued both women. The 83-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 55-year-old was transported to a burn hospital in critical condition. The man sustained minor injuries.

Investigators with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Illinois State Fire Marshal, and Fox Lake Fire Protection District are working to determine the cause of the blaze, which remains unknown. The Lake County Coroner’s Office is conducting an autopsy on the victim.
