Gary, IN – A woman was fatally shot and a man was injured early Friday in separate but related incidents at a gas station, police said.
According to the Gary Police Department, officers responded to a call about a possible gunshot victim in the 700 block of Clay Street at approximately 1:15 a.m. Shortly thereafter, additional calls reported ongoing gunfire near a gas station at 4900 Melton Road. Officers arriving at the scene found several shell casings in the area.
Further investigation led police to a vehicle in the 600 block of Clay Street, where they discovered a 25-year-old woman from Gary with a gunshot wound. The woman, identified by her boyfriend, was transported to Methodist Hospital by the Gary Fire Department but succumbed to her injuries.
The boyfriend, who had initially called 911, recounted that an unidentified man began shooting at him while he was at the gas station. His girlfriend tried to drive away but was struck by gunfire. The suspect allegedly continued firing at the vehicle as she drove off.
In a related incident, officers received a second call about a gunshot victim in the 4900 block of Melton Road. They found a 24-year-old man from Hobart with an abdominal gunshot wound. He was taken to Methodist Northlake Hospital for treatment.
