According to Illinois State Police, officers with the La Salle and Peru Police Departments responded around 1:30 p.m. Sunday to the 600 block of Chartres Street in La Salle for reports of an armed suicidal subject. Police say they encountered Daniel W. Curtin Sr., 72, of La Salle, who allegedly exited his home with a gun and fired a shot into the air.
Authorities requested the La Salle County Sheriff’s Office Tactical Response Team to assist. For more than 90 minutes, officers attempted to de-escalate the situation while Curtin allegedly fired from inside the home.
Police say around 4 p.m., Curtin came out holding a handgun and allegedly pointed it at officers. An officer then discharged their weapon, striking Curtin. First aid was rendered at the scene, but he was pronounced dead.
