La Crosse, Wisconsin – A fast-moving winter system is expected to create hazardous travel conditions across western and central Wisconsin Sunday afternoon, with freezing rain, sleet, and snow developing quickly along and north of Interstate 90. Even light ice could make roads slick within minutes, especially during the afternoon commute.
According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, the wintry mix will move into the region early Sunday afternoon, with the most significant impacts expected from noon through early evening. A thin glaze of ice is possible due to freezing rain, while light snow and sleet may mix in, particularly north of I-90. Ice accumulations are expected to remain light, but temperatures below freezing will allow slick spots to form rapidly.
The highest risk for icy travel includes La Crosse, Black River Falls, Neillsville, and areas toward Eau Claire. Interstate 90, Highway 14, and Highway 16 could see reduced traction, especially on bridges, overpasses, and untreated rural roads. Visibility may also briefly drop where snow mixes in.
Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and be prepared for sudden changes in road conditions. If possible, delaying travel until conditions improve may reduce risk.
Conditions are expected to improve later Sunday evening as the system exits the region, though slick spots could linger overnight. Additional statements or advisories may be issued if impacts increase.
