Minneapolis, Minnesota – Drivers across eastern Minnesota could run into slick roads Sunday afternoon as a narrow band of freezing rain and sleet moves through areas along and east of the Mississippi River. While ice totals are expected to stay light, even a thin glaze could quickly create hazardous travel conditions on untreated roads, bridges, and sidewalks.

According to the National Weather Service Twin Cities office, mixed precipitation will develop Sunday afternoon and persist for roughly two to four hours in any one location. Ice accumulations are expected to remain under one-tenth of an inch, with minor sleet also possible. Temperatures holding in the 20s will allow freezing rain to adhere quickly to exposed surfaces.

The greatest risk for icing includes parts of east-central and southeastern Minnesota, including areas near Red Wing, Winona, and toward the Wisconsin border. Interstate 94 and Highway 61 could see brief slick stretches, particularly on elevated roadways and entrance ramps. Western Minnesota is expected to see little to no impact.

Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and remain alert for sudden changes in road conditions. Pedestrians should use caution on sidewalks and parking lots as ice may be difficult to see.

The precipitation threat diminishes by Sunday evening as the system shifts east, though lingering slick spots could persist into the night. Additional advisories may be issued if conditions worsen later Sunday.
