Louisville, Ky. – A surge of severe thunderstorms threatens central and eastern Kentucky on Friday, with damaging winds and isolated flooding likely across Louisville, Lexington, and surrounding areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, a stalled frontal boundary will bring repeated rounds of showers and storms through Saturday, with the greatest severe threat focused on Friday. A Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) covers a broad swath of central Kentucky, including Frankfort, Richmond, Elizabethtown, and Campbellsville. Parts of western Kentucky face a Marginal Risk Thursday, with confidence increasing for more widespread impacts on Friday.
Key hazards include 60+ mph wind gusts, localized flash flooding, and the potential for large hail. While storms may begin as early as Thursday afternoon, Friday’s line could bring the most significant impacts during the afternoon and evening commute. Power outages and tree damage are possible in the hardest-hit areas.
Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, avoid low-lying flood-prone roads, and ensure weather alerts are enabled on mobile devices. Outdoor events should have a severe weather plan in place.
Storm chances linger into Saturday before conditions improve. Additional alerts may be issued as confidence in timing and intensity grows.
