Jackson, KY – Eastern Kentucky is bracing for significant winter weather, with accumulating snow and dangerous cold expected through Thursday morning. Widespread snowfall is anticipated today, transitioning to scattered snow showers and intense snow squalls this evening.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, up to 4 inches of snow is forecasted in areas such as Pikeville and Hazard, while other regions, including Mount Sterling and London, can expect 2-3 inches. Gusty winds may create whiteout conditions during evening squalls, making travel hazardous.
As the snow tapers off tonight, an arctic cold front will usher in a prolonged period of sub-freezing temperatures. Lows will plummet into the single digits, with wind chills as low as -10°F in northern regions along the I-64 corridor.
Residents are advised to limit outdoor exposure, ensure pets are sheltered, and prepare for icy road conditions. Those traveling should exercise extreme caution, as visibility may be reduced and roads will remain slick through Monday morning.
The NWS warns that sub-freezing temperatures are expected to persist until Thursday, with wind chills below zero continuing to pose a safety risk.
