Lexington, KY – A developing weather system will bring the threat of strong to severe thunderstorms across Kentucky on Monday afternoon and evening, with Lexington and areas north along the Mountain Parkway at highest risk.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, KY, the severe weather is expected to begin Monday, April 14, and intensify into the evening hours. The storms are tied to an approaching cold front that could generate damaging winds—the primary threat across the impacted region.

Counties including Fayette, Montgomery, and Rowan are under a heightened alert. Cities such as Lexington, Morehead, and surrounding communities should prepare for strong wind gusts that may cause downed trees, power outages, and travel disruptions, particularly during the evening commute.

NWS officials advise residents to secure outdoor items, monitor NOAA Weather Radio for warnings, and have a safety plan ready in case severe weather strikes. The agency also notes that while hail and isolated tornadoes are less likely, the fast-moving nature of these storms could amplify their impact.

Historically, April has been an active month for thunderstorms in Kentucky. Monday’s system aligns with that seasonal trend and could affect more than 1 million residents across central and eastern parts of the state.
