Ohio Valley – Travelers and anyone with outdoor plans across the Ohio Valley should prepare for rounds of showers and thunderstorms beginning Tuesday as a cold front moves through the region, bringing the greatest rainfall potential to Kentucky and West Virginia. While widespread river flooding is not expected, slow-moving thunderstorms could produce pockets of heavy rain capable of creating isolated flash flooding, especially in low-lying and poor drainage areas.
According to the National Weather Service Ohio River Forecast Center, the cold front will sweep across the Ohio Valley on Tuesday and Wednesday, fueling numerous showers and thunderstorms from Indiana and Ohio south into Kentucky and east through West Virginia. Forecast rainfall averages around three-quarters of an inch across the basin, with locally higher totals where storms repeatedly move over the same locations.
The heaviest rainfall is expected across much of Kentucky and portions of West Virginia, where localized downpours could briefly overwhelm drainage systems and lead to water covering roads. Communities near small streams, creeks, and urban areas should remain alert for rapidly changing conditions during heavier storms.
Current river forecasts remain favorable, with rainfall amounts not expected to generate river flooding across the Ohio River and Lake Erie drainage basins. However, isolated flash flooding remains possible beneath the strongest thunderstorms due to intense rainfall rates.
Residents should monitor local forecasts, avoid driving through flooded roadways, and have multiple ways to receive weather warnings if thunderstorms develop in their area. Additional weather statements or localized flood advisories may be issued through Wednesday as the front moves across the region.
