Lexington, KY – Kentucky drivers are urged to prepare for flash freeze conditions developing Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, as temperatures tumble behind a cold front sweeping through the region. The National Weather Service says leftover rain and snowmelt could freeze rapidly overnight, forming black ice on major routes including I-64, I-75, and the Bluegrass Parkway.

A flash freeze occurs when pavement temperatures drop below freezing within a short window, instantly turning wet or slushy surfaces into slick, invisible ice. Even though precipitation may end early, roads could glaze over quickly as Arctic air settles in.

Experts note that a car traveling 35 mph on icy pavement can require up to 600 feet to stop — nearly six times farther than on dry roads. Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and avoid sudden braking or acceleration.

“Even with clear skies, icy spots can form fast overnight,” the NWS said in a Tuesday evening update. “Expect slick bridges, ramps, and rural roads during the Wednesday morning commute.”

Motorists across Fayette, Jefferson, and Madison Counties should allow extra travel time Wednesday morning and remain cautious until temperatures rise later in the day.
