Louisville, Kentucky – Roads across southern and central Kentucky could begin flooding in spots this week as repeated rounds of rain and thunderstorms move across drought-stricken areas already expected to receive more than 2 inches of rainfall by Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, daily rain chances are expected through the remainder of the week, with the highest rainfall totals likely south of the Ohio River. Forecasters say south-central Kentucky has the strongest potential for heavier accumulation, including an 80% chance of more than 2 inches of rain near Bowling Green, Somerset and surrounding communities.

The repeated rainfall will help ease ongoing drought conditions, but isolated flash flooding may still develop where thunderstorms repeatedly move over the same locations. Travel along Interstate 65, the Western Kentucky Parkway and Bluegrass Parkway could become hazardous during heavier downpours, especially in low-lying or poor-drainage areas. Emergency officials continue urging drivers to avoid water-covered roads, reminding residents that most flood-related deaths occur inside vehicles.

Rain chances continue daily through Friday, with localized swaths of heavier rainfall possible anywhere stronger thunderstorms develop. Louisville, Elizabethtown and Richmond remain under lower but still notable rainfall probabilities, ranging between 40% and 60% for totals above 2 inches by the end of the week.

Additional flood advisories or excessive rainfall alerts may be issued if storm clusters become more persistent over the same counties later this week.
