LEXINGTON, Ky. – Much of Kentucky faces a severe thunderstorm threat Friday evening, with storms capable of producing damaging winds, large hail, and torrential rain through midnight.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 12 a.m. CDT Saturday for more than 40 counties across central, eastern, and southern Kentucky. The alert covers communities from Bowling Green and Somerset to Pikeville and Harlan, with hazards extending into the Cumberland Plateau.
Emergency officials warn that straight-line winds up to 70 mph could down trees and power lines, leading to scattered outages and blocked roadways. Heavy rainfall may also cause brief flash flooding in low-lying and poor-drainage areas. Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roads and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions along I-64, I-75, and the Cumberland Parkway.
Residents are advised to charge electronic devices, secure outdoor items, and stay indoors during storms. Those in mobile homes or outdoor events should have a safe shelter plan in place.
The severe threat is expected to diminish after midnight, but additional showers and thunderstorms may develop Saturday. The Storm Prediction Center notes further watches are possible if conditions persist.
