Louisville, Kentucky –A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for a large portion of the Ohio Valley, with snow and brief icing expected Tuesday across southern Indiana and central Kentucky, potentially impacting afternoon and evening travel.
According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, periods of snow will develop late Tuesday morning and continue through Tuesday night. Snow accumulations of 1 to 2 inches are expected across parts of south-central Indiana and north-central Kentucky, with a coating to 1 inch expected in adjacent areas. The snow is forecast to be wet and slushy, reducing traction on roadways.
In some locations, especially during the late afternoon and evening, a brief period of freezing rain may mix in, producing a light glaze of ice. Even minor icing could create slick conditions on untreated roads, bridges, sidewalks, and elevated surfaces.
The advisory covers portions of Indiana including Clark, Floyd, Harrison, Jefferson, Scott, Washington, Orange, Crawford, and surrounding counties. In Kentucky, affected areas include Jefferson, Oldham, Henry, Shelby, Franklin, Fayette, Scott, Harrison, Bourbon, Nicholas, and nearby counties. Cities within the advisory area include Louisville, Lexington, Frankfort, Jeffersonville, New Albany, Corydon, Shelbyville, La Grange, and Paris.
The highest travel impacts are expected during the Tuesday afternoon and evening commutes, with lingering slick spots possible into the early overnight hours as temperatures hover near freezing.
Motorists are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and monitor changing road conditions. Travelers can check road conditions by calling 5-1-1 or visiting state transportation websites.
While this advisory is focused on Indiana and Kentucky, the broader Ohio Valley setup may also affect parts of West Virginia if precipitation shifts east later Tuesday night.
